Elmer H. Schmidt was born in 1916 and spent 72 years living on a ranch in Adin that he owned with his brother. The two brothers didn’t own a phone and the closest post office was almost five miles away, so radio became the predominant connection to the outside world. Elmer loved music and had several old instruments including a pipe organ. When he passed away in 2012, the Elmer H. Schmidt Christian Broadcasting Fund was established to support Christian radio stations, churches, and television broadcasters.
This past year, a grant from the fund went to support Vox Media’s efforts to expand their services in Liberia. For the past six years, Vox Media was broadcasting from a shipping container in Marshall, Liberia. Grant funds helped the group move to a new building, install a 96-foot radio tower (expanding reach to 500,000 listeners), and progress on broadcasting 24/7.
